About us: my husband Pieter J. van Damme (Pedro) and I: Ines van Damme moved from Holland to the Spanish Costa Blanca in 1987. In the same year the Fila Brasileiro came into our lives and nowadays we could not imagine how to live without this noble breed. . The early years of living with this breed of dog proved to be a huge learning experience. We came to know and understand the wonderful character of the Fila and we were to learn about the ecological crime of mixbreeding which had been inflicted in Brazil in the seventies and eighties of the last century - and which seriously damaged the phenotype and genotype of the breed. Iin the beginning of our Fila life, my husband started to participate in dog shows all over Spain and later abroad. During fifteen years he traveled from Lisbon to Budapest and from Gibraltar to Helsinki and all the places in between. Many of our dogs became champions in Spain and many other countries, some of them even became European champion and one of them World Champion. Not satisfied with the quality we had in the first years we started to travel to Brazil to know the breed in the country of origin and to buy better specimens. From 1994 until now we realized many trips, to Minas Gerais which can be considered the cradle of the breed and also to many other states in Brazil with the aim to observe nature and see historic places. That first "Brazil period" we imported about ten pure Filas to refresh our breeding stock. We bred about two alphabets in twenty years. In 2009, on mature consideration we decided to stop breeding. We hope that the younger people will continue breeding Fila Brasileiros, with respect for the authentic type and character, controlling dysplasia and doing DNA tests. This is what we have done, it is not the easiest way, but it is the only honest way to serve the breed. So now my husband and I are "retired" from Filaworld, we do not show anymore, we do not breed anymore and neither are we related to breeding clubs anymore. This does not mean that we have lost all energy, on the contrary, we have kept all our Filas and take very good care of them and this is an enormous job. Of course we maintain contacts with Fila people that have shown through the years to be real friends and this makes life very pleasant. We really believe than one is never too old to learn, so we go on reading and studying all kinds of subjects, most of them related to nature and history. My husband who is a biologist, does birdwatching in Brazil and also in Spain. I am doing all kinds of research about the European dogs that were taken to Latin America by the colonists and one day I hope to be able to publish the interesting items that I have discovered. To our website we will frequently add new information, most of which will be articles about the fila breed. Ines van Damme, May 2010 |
